Physical Powers - Dampening: Grimbor, aka "Grimbor the Chainsman," is a pre-Crisis enemy of the Legion of Super Heroes. He specialized in anti-super-hero restraints.

Physical Powers - Digestive Adaptability: In the post-Zero Hour continuity of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Tenzil is the team cook. Before their timeline was completely restarted, however, Tenzil was better known as "Matter-Eater Lad," and was one of the earliest members of the team.

Physical Powers - Suspended Animation: E. Nelson Bridwell was a comics writer, but is primarily known as the caretaker of the pre-Crisis Superman mythology.

Mental Powers - Empathy: "Brave and Bold" was a Batman team-up series; Richard "Dick" Sprang was a famous Batman artist.

Mental Powers - Illusion: Oblique reference to the classic WB cartoon short, "One Froggy Evening."

Mental Powers - Mind Control: Homage: to the cover of Flash #133 aka "Plight of the Puppet Flash!"; The Flash's full name was Barry Henry Allen.

Mental Powers - Postcognition: In pre-Crisis Superman lore, Professor Phineas Potter was a famous eccentric inventor, Lana Lang's uncle (on her mother's side), and a semi-constant source of irritation to both Superboy and Superman, with inventions that often ran wild. He was also sometimes of some assistance.

Mental Powers - Spirit Storage: Kordco is the company owned by Theodore "Ted" Kord, the Blue Beetle; Deadman strikes again

Mental Powers - Telekinesis: WHIZ is the radio station Billy Batson works for. Captain Marvel was introduced in Whiz Comics.

DoS Decoded

Note: Many of the "hidden" references used by the authors of the Directive on Superpowers used an alpha-to-numeric code. The letter "A" would be represented by a "1," "L" by "12," etc. Specific examples are given below.

Mental Powers - Astral Form: BB = Boston Brand, secret ID of Deadman; 1967 = year of his first appearance

Mental Powers - Mental Blast: 3600 = number of sectors assigned to GL Corps; AS = Atomic Skull; 0113 = Dr. Albert Michaels, the Silver Age Atomic Skull's mundane ID

Mental Powers - Postcognition: 3691 = 1963 reversed; OS = Oliver Stone; 1103 = K.C. = Kennedy Conspiracy

Manipulation Powers (Universe) - Astral Manipulation: (Memo was included in the DoS on p. 125) 0416 = D.P. = Doom Patrol; EG = Elasti-Girl; 1806 = R.F. = Rita Farr, Elasti-Girl's secret ID; 1305 = M.E. + NTO = MENTO helmet; M = Mento; 1904 = S.D. = Steve Dayton

Operative 367: 367 = C.F.G., a acronym making reference to a crustacian-shaped mask worn by the current holder of a classic hero name.

Operative 4182: (DCU character write-up) This one's not D.A.H.B. or D.R.B., it's 2814 reversed. Put that number together with the information in "Jay Hall's" biography and it should become fairly obvious ;-).
